Do you need your own web server?

You’ve seen cheap web hosting plans advertised for $3.99USD/month on some company websites. When you go to sign up, you see a multitude of other plans and the price ranges vary on a large scale. So what’s the difference?
Will it be just 1 site or many sites? Is it a CMS based site such as WordPress? Do you require a database to run dynamic webpages? Do you have expertise or manned resources to administer a dedicated server?
You can consider hosting and building with WordPress.com for free. You can map your own domain if you have one registered or use the included WordPress.com subdomain.
Single static sites can be built and hosted on free hosted builders such as wix.com. ~ Also with the option to use with a branded wix subdomain or with your own domain.
You can upload your own self-hosted CMS or HTML static websites to your own hosting accounts as well. If hosting and managing your own web server, consider the many options listed here already by other Quora members or Google it. There are cheap (all-you-can eat unlimited resources) shared managed hosting (shared with thousands of other users) and there is dedicated hosting where the server is all yours. Dedicated can be managed or unmanaged depending on your needs, budget and level of expertise to administer a server.
